HOW MUCH GROUND HAS REALLY LOST ITALIAN WINE IN CHINA? NO REASON TO BE PESSIMISTIC

17/09/2020 14:20

A single figure appeared in a Report published by Coldiretti, the Italian national agricultural association, has generated misleading titles in the media (“Italian wine exports to China are drying up”) and some unjustified pessimism on the state of Italian wine export to China. The Report, which was addressing the state of the art of the Italian wine industry in general, mentioned that the export of Italian wine has dropped by 44% by in the first five months of 2020, due to the post Covid-19 crisis.

It is difficult to understand where Coldiretti has taken the figure from. The official Chinese data say that in the period January – June 2020 the drop of Italian wine export to China has been of 32.60% in terms of quantity and 30.32% in terms of value, absolutely in line with the drop of the wine imported by China from the 10 main exporting countries (including France, Chile, Australia, Spain, USA etc) respectively at 31.89 and 32.32. These are Chinese governmental figures made public by the China Association for Imports and Exports of Wine and Spirits. So, there is no reason to think that Italy will pay a heavier price for the crisis. On the contrary, within the general post Covid-19 drop, Italy’s wine export to China in first semester of 2020 performed better than France, Chile and the USA and roughly the same than Spain. In any case, even Coldiretti expects that Italian wine export markets will recover in 2021, including China. The figures of August, soon to be published, should confirm the recovering trend.
